Behind the Lens

Fifteen years of Singapore weddings — why the photographs that last are rarely the arranged ones, and what a female photographer brings to the quietest parts of the day.
I’m Stephanie Teo, the photographer behind Stephanie Teo Weddings & Film. For the past 15 years, I have had the privilege of photographing weddings across Singapore — quiet solemnisation ceremonies, lively celebrations, elegant hotel weddings and intimate outdoor gatherings.
Although every wedding looks different, the photographs that stay closest to my heart are rarely the most carefully arranged ones. They are the unplanned moments: a parent holding back tears, a bride laughing with her closest friends, a reassuring hand just before the ceremony, or a couple forgetting about the camera and simply enjoying each other.
These are the moments I look for.
My approach to candid wedding photography
I believe wedding photography should help you remember how your day felt, not only how it looked.
My approach is candid, observant and unobtrusive. I offer direction when it is helpful, especially during portraits and group photographs, but I do not want your wedding to feel like a day-long photoshoot.
Instead, I pay attention to the people around you, anticipate meaningful interactions and photograph them as naturally as possible. After 15 years, experience has taught me when to step forward, when to wait, and when a small moment is about to become an important one.
The result is a collection of photographs that feels polished but still honest — images filled with movement, character and real emotion. You can see how that plays out across a whole day in the portfolio.
What I bring as a female wedding photographer
Every photographer brings a different personality and perspective to a wedding.
As a female photographer, I understand that getting ready can be an emotional and vulnerable part of the day. I work calmly and respectfully around the bride, her family and her bridal party, while remaining attentive to the details and interactions unfolding in the room.
Some brides also feel more comfortable having a woman nearby during dressing, preparation and personal moments. My role is to create that sense of ease while documenting the occasion sensitively.
But the value I bring is not based on gender alone. It comes from combining empathy with 15 years of experience: reading the room, helping people feel comfortable, managing time without adding pressure, and noticing relationships that may not be obvious to everyone else.

Experience brings calm to a wedding day
Weddings do not always follow the schedule exactly. Weather changes. Ceremonies run late. Light disappears faster than expected. Family members wander away just before a group photograph.
Experience allows me to respond calmly.
I know how to make the most of a short portrait session, work with changing light and adjust the photography plan without making the couple feel rushed. This is especially valuable during outdoor weddings, where the weather and natural light play such an important part — something I write about in more detail in what happens if it rains on your wedding day.
My couples should be present for their celebration. They should not have to spend the day worrying about whether every meaningful moment is being captured.

Photographing weddings at Singapore’s iconic venues
I am especially drawn to outdoor celebrations and venues with history, character and beautiful natural light.
Raffles Hotel is one of my favourite places to photograph. Its architecture, verandas and greenery create an elegant backdrop without overwhelming the people in the photographs.
The Fullerton Hotel offers a different atmosphere, with its grand architecture and connection to Singapore’s cityscape. St. Regis Singapore lends itself beautifully to refined, timeless celebrations.
I also enjoy photographing weddings at JW Marriott Singapore South Beach, Hilton Singapore Orchard, Goodwood Park Hotel and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. Each venue offers a different character, from contemporary city celebrations and elegant ballrooms to heritage surroundings and beautiful outdoor spaces.
Knowing how to work with each venue’s architecture, lighting and schedule allows me to create photographs that feel natural while making the most of the setting. Even at the most impressive venue, however, my focus remains on the people. The surroundings provide the context, but the expressions, relationships and fleeting interactions give the photographs their meaning.

Photographs that become more valuable with time
Wedding photographs are not only created for the wedding day.
Over time, they become part of a family’s history. Expressions and interactions that seemed small on the day can become some of the most treasured images in an album.
That is why I photograph weddings with both beauty and longevity in mind. I want you to recognise yourselves in the photographs — not a version of you created solely for the camera.
If you are looking for a female wedding photographer in Singapore who values candid moments, calm guidance and honest storytelling, I would love to hear about your plans.
